Jude in Opatija

Every fall for five years now I have driven Jude to the airport for his journey to the World Senior Chess Championship. This has been dubbed “White Horse Limo Service”, for reasons that only Acers could adequately explain. This year, as I helped load his baggage in the White Horse Limo, I could hardly lift his backpack. All his critical chess books were in there, he explained, as he could not risk putting them in the checked baggage. As I write this, it is 3am in Croatia, and I have no doubt that he is booking it heavily in his hotel room, preparing for his second round match. Having scored a first round win, he has moved up in the pairings and will face Czech GM Vlatstimil Jansa, one of the top players in the field of over 200. There are 16 live boards displayed every day on the tournament web site, rijekachess.com, and this game will surely be one of them, with action commencing about 9am New Orleans time.
