we were chess players
\nonce, and young;
\nour songs are sung,
\nour bells are rung.
\nour names, that once
\ntripped off the tongue,
\nare now less than
\na heap of dung.
\nwhile victory strews
\nher wreaths among
\nthe present gen
\n-eration, strung
\nwith ribbons and
\nwith honors hung,
\nshe has forgotten
\nhow each rung
\nwe climbed brought shouts
\nfrom every lung.
\nwe are bereft.
\nwe are down flung.
\nno more the crags
\nto which we clung
\noffer us footing;
\nwhere we swung
\non clouds has closed,
\nand how it stung
\nwhen to us the
\nfirst news was brung.
\nall hail the youth
\nwith backpack slung!
\nwe too were chess players
\nonce, and young.<\/p>\n
